Fairfax County, VA Area Guide

History

Formed in 1742, Fairfax County is named after Thomas Fairfax, the 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron and proprietor of the Northern Neck.  The earliest settlements here sprung up along the Potomac River, and George Washington moved to Fairfax to build his home, Mount Vernon, facing the river.  Thomas Fairfax was the only member of the British nobility to reside in the colonies here, and he lived at Belvoir Manor until he moved to the Shenandoah Valley.  The Belvoir Manor and many of its outbuildings were destroyed in a fire following the Revolutionary War in 1783, and George Washington wrote that the plantation eventually fell into ruins.
